Long on Beauty and Affluence Calling Long Island Home

Known for both affluence and beauty, Long Island is a mix of charming villages and big business.  It is the largest island adjoining the continental United States and comprises the four counties of Kings, Queens, Nassau and Suffolk.  However, because Kings (Brooklyn) and Queens are also part of the New York City Metro area, traditionally, Long Island has become known as Nassau and Suffolk counties. 

Nassau County is home to three townships, two cities, 64 villages and 56 school districts, while Suffolk is made up of ten townships, 31 villages and 72 school districts.  The area has four distinct seasons and sees summer highs around 85 degrees and winter lows around 30.

The Long Island area is home to over 2.7 million residents with a median age range of 30-35.  It is consistently named one of the best places to live in the United States by Money Magazine.  This distinction is due largely to the areas low unemployment rate, high per capita income ($74,564 per year – second in the nation) and abundant recreational opportunities.

The publication Distinction Long Island describes the typical Long Island resident as well educated (over half with college degrees) in a white collar profession with six out of ten working right on the Island.   In addition, well over three quarters (78%) own their own homes.  While median home values in the area are in excess of $483,700. 

Long Island as a whole enjoys a great deal of affluence in the business and economic sectors as well. Over 114,432 businesses are located on the Island. The area is home to over 300 life sciences firms, 4,000 software and information technology organizations and 450 electronics businesses.  It also has a thriving tourism industry, bringing in $4.88 billion annually and employing 129,000 individuals.  Retail is also thriving on Long Island.  This is due in part to the high per capita income of its residents.  On average, annual retail spending exceeds, $35,700 per household.

The Island is home to wide variety of entertainment options as well.  Residents enjoy biking, beach combing, boating, golf and tennis.  And, with the close proximity to New York City, theater, museums and concerts are just a short trip away.   In addition, the local chamber of commerce and visitor’s bureaus always have a host of activities for both residents and visitors to enjoy.  The area is a combination of raw natural beauty thanks to its many beaches, parks and bustling community happenings.  

Real estate on Long Island is a bit pricey, however, the historical nature of many of the homes available makes them highly desired commodities.  And, agents have a variety of tools in which to market these properties.  One of the most effective is through online sites such as the local or regional MLS or the Long Island news and business site called longisland.com.  In addition the Hamptons has an online site called Eastend.com The most recognized newspaper option on Long Island is Newsday.  However, there are several weekly publications including Long Island Press, The Anton Newspapers (a group of 18 community newspapers), Suffolk Life Weekly Newspapers, The Massapequa Post, The Times Beacon Record (Northern Suffolk) and the East Hampton Star (East Hampton).

Long Island is known for its quaint harbor towns and villages and unsurpassed natural beauty. With a long history of attracting residents in upper income tax brackets, it is also known as the crown jewel of residential communities with a stellar reputation for both business and real estate ventures.
